Basketball: court hire and finding players

Outdoor hoops are free but crowded and weather-dependent; an indoor court for an hour gives your group a real game. This guide explains how court hire works, what to check in a hall and how to find players for 3x3 or 5v5.

Store badges will be replaced by the official badge artwork once the listings are live.

How it's played

  • Full-court basketball is 5 v 5 on a 28 × 15 m court with 3.05 m rims. Casual groups often play half-court 3 v 3 or 4 v 4 with “make it, take it” or alternating possession.
  • 3x3 is an official format: one hoop, 10-minute game or first to 21, 12-second shot clock, baskets inside the arc count 1 and outside count 2.
  • Agree on fouls (call your own), out-of-bounds and scoring before you start – most arguments come from unspoken rules.

What you need

  • Ball: size 7 for men, size 6 for women; indoor leather or composite balls on wooden floors, rubber balls outdoors.
  • Shoes: basketball shoes with ankle support and non-marking soles for indoor halls.
  • Bibs in two colours if you have ten players; a scoreboard or phone app for keeping score.
  • Water and a towel – indoor halls get hot.

How to find a court near you

  • Venue types: school and university gyms rented in the evening, municipal sports halls, private indoor centres, and outdoor public courts (free, no booking).
  • Check whether you rent a half court or a full court, the floor (wood or synthetic), rim height (lowered rims for kids), opening hours and whether the hall is shared with other sports at the same time.
  • Indoor courts are busiest on weekday evenings; weekend afternoons are usually easier.
  • In Sparrio, filter by basketball to see halls and courts near you, request a slot, or post “need 4 more for 5v5” and let players nearby join.

Booking tips

  • For 5v5 book at least 90 minutes – warm-up and team selection eat into an hour.
  • Half-court hire is cheaper and enough for up to eight players.
  • Ask about parking and whether the floor is cleaned between bookings; dusty floors are slippery.
  • Keep a reserve list; basketball groups suffer most from last-minute drop-outs.

What affects the price

  • Indoor courts are priced per court (or half court) per hour and split between players. City, hall quality and prime time drive the price; outdoor public courts are free.
  • Each venue in Sparrio shows its own price range.
