Table tennis: tables, rules and finding an opponent
Table tennis is cheap, indoor and needs just one other person. Public tables are free but weather-dependent; a rented table in a hall gives you a real game. This guide covers the basics and where to look.
Store badges will be replaced by the official badge artwork once the listings are live.
How it's played
- Singles or doubles on a 2.74 × 1.525 m table with a 15.25 cm net. Games to 11, win by two, best of five or seven; serve alternates every two points.
- The serve must be tossed at least 16 cm and struck so the ball bounces on your side first, then the opponent's. In doubles, partners alternate shots.
- Spin dominates: learn to read the opponent's bat angle before worrying about speed.
What you need
- Bat: a pre-made all-round bat is fine to start; competitive players build a blade with rubbers.
- Balls: 40+ mm plastic balls, three-star for matches.
- Non-marking indoor shoes and clothing in a colour different from the ball.
How to find a court near you
- Tables are in sports halls, table tennis clubs, community centres, universities and some bars and co-working spaces; outdoor concrete tables are in many parks.
- Check the space around the table (at least 1.5 m each side), lighting, floor grip and whether bats and balls are rented.
- In Sparrio, filter by table tennis to find venues with tables near you and request a slot; post a request to find an opponent at your level.
Booking tips
- An hour is enough for singles; book 90 minutes for a group rotating on one table.
- Clubs often run open evenings – a good way to find regular opponents.
- Bring your own balls; venues frequently run out.
What affects the price
- Tables are rented per table per hour at low cost compared with other sports; outdoor park tables are free.
- Each venue in Sparrio shows its own price range.
